Tips for Your Little Ones to Undergo Their First Fasting
Fasting does not only apply to those who have reached the age of puberty. Children aged 7 years and over may also do it. From a medical perspective, children at that age can undergo fast fasting, provided they are supported by the right nutritional intake.
In general, fasting can provide health benefits for those who run it. With a note, it is done correctly. But if done not according to the rules, fasting can harm the body such as ulcers and dehydration.
When fasting, usually gastric acid levels can be reduced. However, thinking about food or imagining the aroma can make more acid production on the stomach to trigger ulcers.
While dehydration is a condition that is common when fasting. During fasting, the body constantly loses water and salt in the body. These two substances are used when the body breathes, sweating, and urinating. Meanwhile, while fasting the body does not get water and salt supply.
This condition can make the little one sluggish, his lips dry, his eyes are concave, dizzy, looking stressed, or even fainting.
Here are tips for teaching children to fast, but still keep their bodies healthy:
- No full fasting. Teaching children to fast to be done slowly. It is recommended to teach him to hold thirst and hungry for a few hours first. Don't immediately tell children to fast a day. For example, the little one can start fasting from IMSAK time until 10. After a few days, he can break the fast at 12 am-noon (fasting half a day). And so on until he felt strong to fantastic fully since Maghrib arrived.
- Sahur is very important. Sahur might be the time that best tested your patience. Usually, the little one wakes up when the sun has shone brightly, but during Ramadan, he has to wake up when the sky is still dark. Even though he constantly refused to wake up, you don't give up. Remember, eating sahur is an important thing when fasting, especially for your child.
So that your little one is easily awakened, make sure he doesn't sleep late at night.
Intake during sahur. Eating the right intake when sahur is very important to support his body while fasting.
Food. Foods that must be consumed when sahur must have balanced nutrition and can give him energy during the day. However, that does not mean you have to feed it with excess portions.
The food recommended during sahur is complex carbohydrate intake such as wheat, nuts, wheat cereals, grains, wheat bread, or brown rice. The energy of this food source is released slowly in the body so that it lasted longer to occur if it consumes this type of intake. This food can also make it full length, rather than processed carbohydrate foods such as white rice or white bread.
Fiber-rich food is also recommended during sahur, such as vegetables and fruits.
To prevent it from experiencing ulcers, avoid consuming foods that are fried, oily, or spicy.
When sahur is also recommended to avoid foods containing high sugar and fat.
Drink. Given that when fasting the body is more likely to experience dehydration, it is recommended to give a small enough liquid intake. Avoid giving him caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee, or soft drinks. These three types of drinks can make it faster dehydrated.
You can give him enough water at sahur. Because if not, the risk of the little one is dehydrated will increase. It is very important to consume drinks that contain vitamins such as fruit juice.
Isotonic drinks can also be used as an option to prevent dehydration. Isotonic drinks have the same sugar and salt concentration as body fluids. Not only water, but isotonic drinks also contain electrolytes, an electric-charged mineral agent that can be found in the body. Substances called electrolytes include calcium, bicarbonate, potassium, and sodium. This drink can also maintain energy because it contains carbohydrates.
The breaking fast menu. Start breaking the fast by consuming a lot of water. This can help re-hydrate your body which lacks liquid while fasting. Lost body fluids can also be replaced quickly by consuming isotonic drinks at the time of breaking.
After that, you can give dates for your little one. This fruit can quickly give power to him. Then you can start giving him a heavier intake, but healthy. You can also present his favorite food as an encouragement to fast like ice cream. Remember, don't let your baby overheat when breaking the fast.
Although still children, the little one can, you know, it is invited to learn to resist hunger and thirst. However, don't force him too hard. If he looks not strong, you can avoid him to break the fast. Or, if your child has a certain disease condition, it is recommended to consult a doctor before teaching him fasting.
